Folio 2020 Summer Institute Deconstructed
July 13 – 31, 2020
Online via Zoom
This year’s Folio Collaborative Summer Institute is going virtual!
We’ve deconstructed our popular annual event into individual experiences so you can create a Summer Institute that works best for you!
Join the Collaborative for…
Three weeks of informative, interactive, relevant virtual programs for independent school leaders and leadership teams in the Folio community to:
- support faculty morale and culture, especially during remote teaching and at times of uncertainty.
- drive change for faculty and staff professional growth.
- share best practices and insights with your peers at independent schools around the country and abroad.
- expand your “leadership toolkit” to increase your resiliency and ability to lead effectively, especially during crises.
- understand how to best use the Folio process to support faculty and staff professional growth.
- explore your school’s beliefs, mission and values and how they can inspire individual professional growth.
- develop a Folio Playbook — a workplan that details the “why” and the “how” of your school’s approach to Folio will drive professional growth at your school.
Summer Institute Deconstructed programs include:
Folio Workshops:
Two-hour sessions facilitated by the Folio team starting with the WHY and working through to the HOW for topics including ongoing reflection, observation, and feedback.
At Your Core Seminars:
Noted educational culture consultant Stephanie Mann will lead a series of sessions for leadership teams to examine their schools’ values and explore how to make them the basis for professional development and faculty morale.
Folio Leadership Consultancies:
In these twice-a-week discussions among small cohorts, members will present and receive feedback from their peers about their current problems of practice.
Fierce Conversations® Training:
Based on Susan Scott’s book, Fierce Conversations, this course teaches attendees how to ignite productive dialogue that interrogates reality, provokes learning, resolves tough challenges and enriches relationships.

At Your Core Seminar: Using Values to Drive Professional Growth
Two Mondays - 2:00 - 3:30 PM EST / 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM PDT
July 13 and July 20
One-hour preparatory and summative seminars will be scheduled the week of July 6 and in August
Zoom
This seminar includes four sessions; participants must attend all four sessions.
Folio Collaborative is partnering with At Your Core, a leading management consultant dedicated to helping organizations develop their team’s culture, for a multi-day program for school leadership teams. Teams will work together to learn about why values matter and how they directly impact a team’s success and morale, particularly during times of rapid change and uncertainty. They will review their school’s mission, vision, and values and examine how those values are currently visible in the faculty and staff professional growth cycle, and will begin building a strategy for embedding those values into all aspects of the school’s approach to professional development, anchored in their use of the Folio process and platform.
The two 90-minute seminars will be preceded by a 60-minute preparatory webinar to preview values content. This webinar will be scheduled for the week prior to the first workshop. A 60-minute summative School Leadership Team Implementation Planning session with Folio will be scheduled for August.
This seminar is designed for School Leadership Teams responsible for facilitating the professional growth cycle for faculty and staff.

Folio Leadership Consultancy
Three consecutive Tuesdays and Thursdays
Consultancy 1: July 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30 - 9:00 - 10:00 AM EST / 6:00 - 7:00 AM PDT
Consultancy 2: July 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30 - 12:00 - 1:00 PM EDT/9:00 - 10:00 AM PDT
There are two Consultancies; participants should select a Consultancy and must attend all six sessions.
The Folio Leadership Consultancy provides the space and structure for peer-to-peer conversations based on the belief that each one of us already has everything we need to do the work that we need to do within ourselves but that even for the most self-reflective among us, it’s helpful to have an external sounding board to listen, ask probing questions, and expand our thinking. Through the use of the Consultancy Protocol, participants will develop their capacity to see and describe the dilemmas that are the essential aspects of their work, and help each other understand and deal with those dilemmas. Each member of the group will identify and prepare a dilemma to present.
This workshop is designed for Folio school leaders responsible for leading adults in their school.

Folio Workshop: Observation and Feedback — Focusing on What Matters
Wednesday, July 15 - 9:00-11:00 AM EDT / 6:00 - 8:00 AM PDT
Wednesday, July 15 - 12:00-2:00 PM EDT / 9:00-11:00 AM PDT
Zoom
This workshop is being offered twice; participants should select one of these sessions.
Given the uncertainties surrounding next school year, it’s important to focus on what matters most - those aspects that will remain relevant in a physical, virtual, or hybrid school environment. Observation and targeted feedback can positively impact faculty and staff performance and support community morale. In this workshop, we’ll work together to review the fundamentals of effective observation, explore how non-traditional observation methods strengthen and complement traditional scheduled classroom observation, brainstorm about observation protocol for enduring elements of effective teaching, practice observation through role play, and draft a framework for implementing a targeted observation and feedback approach that works in physical and virtual schooling environments.
This workshop is designed for Folio school leaders responsible for facilitating the observation and feedback process with faculty and staff.

Folio Workshop: Ongoing Reflection as a Tool for Growth and Innovation
Wednesday, July 29 9:00 - 11:00 AM EDT / 6:00 - 8:00 AM PDT
Wednesday, July 29 12:00 - 2:00 PM EDT / 9:00 - 11:00 AM PDT
Zoom
This workshop is being offered twice; participants should select one of these sessions.
Great educators are self-reflective, continually thinking about what worked and what didn’t work in their daily practice and then using that information to make adjustments. By establishing shared structures, dedicating time, and working side-by-side with teachers to unpack and innovate based on reflection, school leaders demonstrate their commitment to reflective practice. In this workshop, we’ll explore how adult learners use reflection as a way to process, draw connections, find relevance, and make meaning from their experiences, learn about the common elements of effective reflection practices; think about how we might expand our reflection practices, brainstorm ways to help teachers use their reflections as the starting place for innovation, and create and receive feedback on a draft framework for implementing a multi-faceted, embedded approach to reflection with your faculty and staff.
This workshop is designed for Folio school leaders responsible for facilitating the observation and feedback process with faculty and staff.
